The purpose of an amplifier is to amplify the incoming signal to a high power and then to be forwarded to a speaker.

It is important that the input resistance of the speaker is at least as high as the output resistance of the amplifier (usually 4 Ohm, 8 Ohm or 16 Ohm). A guitar amp usually also has the ability to increase Gain (= input gain that can cause distortion) or to adjust low (Bass), mid (Mid) or high (High) tones. Sometimes there is also a possibility to add effects such as Chorus or Reverb to the signal or to connect additional equipment (stomp boxes) with a separate input and output.
